A 39-year-old Sparks man died after collapsing at the inaugural Sierra Recon mud run at Sierra-at-Tahoe ski resort Saturday.

Joseph Axtman collapsed about 11:30 a.m. while traversing a boulder field about two miles into the course, said El Dorado County Sheriff’s Lt. Pete Van Arnum.

Bystanders began performing CPR on Axtman soon after he collapsed and paramedics transported him to Barton Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Van Arnum said.

A Tuesday autopsy revealed Axtman died from a heart attack, Van Arnum said.
