Six George Whittell High School students were recently honored with the 2002 Nevada Silver Scholar Award. This award is presented to the top 10 percent of high school junior students in recognition of their dedication and hard work, which led to a consistent record of superior academic achievement.

The recipients are Jarret Guajardo, Lorin Kline, Jacqueline Laurian, Alicia Thorne, Alyson Van Deusen and Shelly Zaskoda. Each student received a certificate and a Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary during a ceremony in the Whittell High School library.

“The Silver Scholar Program not only serves to recognize the excellence of the members of the junior class in Nevada’s high schools, it reinforces the importance of continuing the student’s education,” said William Cobb, Silver Scholars volunteer.

“The program also educates the students that although attending a university may be expensive, there are many financial aid programs that make college achievable.”

The Nevada Silver Scholar Award is sponsored by the Wilber D. May Foundation, SBC Nevada Bell, University of Nevada, Reno and the University of Nevada, Reno Alumni Association.
