Six agencies rescue fallen rock climber

A rock climber from Wyoming with a fractured ankle in the Desolation Wilderness received a boost on Tuesday from South Shore rescue workers.

Twenty-three representatives from six agencies pulled Brandon Eyre, 24, of Lyman, Wyo., from the northeast side of Eagle Lake. The rock climber had fallen 20 feet after his gear malfunctioned.

Rescuers stabled Eyre’s injury and moved him about 100 yards to an area where a California Highway Patrol helicopter hovering 50 feet above hoisted him to the Vikingsholm parking lot to a Lake Valley Ambulance.

Eyre underwent surgery Tuesday night at Barton Memorial Hospital, according to Terry Fleck, an El Dorado County sheriff’s deputy and search and rescue coordinator. When they reached the lake, rescue workers had to maneuver through waist deep snow and rocks, Fleck said.

Other agencies involved in the rescue were the U.S. Forest Service, Lake Valley Fire Department, Meeks Bay Fire Department, and the California Conservation Corps.

“You need a minimum of 16 people on a carryout,” Fleck said.

A companion of Eyre’s used a cellular phone to report the accident at 3:30 p.m. Eyre was in the ambulance at 5:30 p.m., Fleck said.

“This time of year we deal with a lot of victims in the backcountry,” Fleck said. “With the melting snow it’s easy to slip and fall, so people should be extra cautious.”
