Skating rink just around the corner

Construction on South Lake Tahoe’s long-awaited ice skating rink is under way.

The building’s framing should be completed sometime Friday, South Lake Tahoe Parks Superintendent Steve Weiss said.

“The steel frame building structure over the ice rink itself is being erected right now,” Weiss said Thursday afternoon. “It’s the major portion of the building. It’s the tallest and the biggest, as far as area.”

Infrastructure work also should be finished today and workers will continue pouring concrete for the foundation of the building.

As mandated by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, the grading season in the Lake Tahoe Basin ends Monday.

The Measure S project plan includes two buildings: the tall building which will house the rink, and a smaller, seemingly connected building with offices, a snack bar and other public access areas.

Weiss said the project, in its entirety, likely will be finished by January or February and the rink will open at that time.
