Small fire in Douglas jail on Friday

The Douglas County Jail was evacuated early Friday because of a fire.

Smoke filled the laundry room and a corridor in the jail about 12:51 a.m., fire officials said.

The jail staff evacuated all inmates into the law enforcement building. On-duty deputies and off-duty personnel were called in to handle security while firefighters from the paramedics station, Douglas County Engine Co., Gardnerville and Genoa volunteer stations responded. Two deputies were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, but no inmates were injured.

The fire started in a dryer and ignited a tennis shoe, said East Fork Fire Inspector Terry Taylor. He said the cause is under investigation, but officials believe the fire was accidental.
