Snow removal measures defeated

Supporters of two ballot measures that would at least double the annual snow removal parcel fee to pay for replacing equipment were disappointed by election returns Tuesday, as both measures were defeated.

The South Lake Tahoe backed Measure R was soundly defeated with 54 percent of the voters saying no. County Measure S needed to win by 66 percent. It garnered 52 percent of the vote.

Measure R, the city’s version that would have raise the $20 parcel fee to $40 plus a 3 percent inflationary adjustment.

South Lake Tahoe City Councilman John Upton said he’s disappointed but not surprised.

“I think the council did the right thing in trying to come forward with a measure that had long-term stability,” he said, adding that he would like to see the measure return in June.

Measure S, the county’s version that would have hiked the fee from $20 to $50.
