Snow survey measurement set for today

What: First Sierra snow water measurement this year

When: 11 a.m. today

Where: Phillips Station near Echo Summit about 100 yards from the Sierra-at-Tahoe turnoff

The first Sierra snow water measurement of 2001 will be taken today near Echo Summit.

The California Cooperative Snow Surveys have been conducted for 70 years by the California Department of Water Resources and other local agencies.

The water resources department visits hundreds of snow measurement courses in the Sierra each month through May to gauge the amount of water in the snowpack.

The water content is important to determine the coming year’s water supply, and the measurements help hydrologists prepare water supply forecasts and provide data to ski resorts.
