Snowboarder found dead at Sierra-at-Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – A 22-year-old San Jose man who was reported missing from Sierra-at-Tahoe Ski Resort Saturday was found dead Sunday morning.

Search and rescue volunteers located Phillip Walker in a tree well about 11:50 a.m. Sunday, according to a statement from El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.

Walker was snowboarding with his brother and friends near Upper Powderhorn Trail in the resort’s West Bowl area when he went missing, according to the statement.

Volunteers began looking for Walker about 5 p.m. Saturday.

Up to 60 people were involved in the search, which was scaled back Saturday night because of poor weather, according to the statement.

Rescuers used snowshoes, skis, snowmobiles and a snow cat in the search for Walker, who deputies described as an intermediate snowboarder dressed appropriately for weather conditions.

He was not prepared to overnight in the area, according to the statement.

Walker was covered in several inches of snow when he was found. The cause of death has not been determined.

“The initial investigation suggests Phillip impacted the tree, however it has not been determined if the impact or the winter weather caused his death,” according to the statement.
