Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra recently announced the recipients of the “On Your Way” Award from Tahoe Valley Elementary School.

This award is designed to recognize these students who have been working especially hard to improve their literacy skills. The three students recognized are Gilbert Garcia, Jose Medina, and Gabe Reynosa.

Each student was presented a plaque in the presence of their peers, awarded a $25 gift certificate to Neighbors Bookstore, and a book was donated to the school on behalf of each recipient.

Third-grader Gilbert Garcia was selected because he has worked very hard in all areas and as a result, has moved up four levels in his reading. Gilbert liked to read because he learns a lot when he reads. His favorite books are from the “Hardy Boys” series.

Jose Medina is in the fourth grade. Jose was selected because, according to his teacher, he has made tremendous growth in reading and has tried hard all year. Jose said reading is fun and he likes to see what is going to happen next. His favorite book is “Holes.”

Fifth-grade student Gabe Reynosa was selected because he has a fantastic attitude and a wonderful sense of humor. Gabe is also a hard worker in all his subjects. Gabe is proud of his efforts because his grandpa is happy that his reading has improved. Gabe’s favorite book is “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.”

The “On Your Way” Award is one of the many programs sponsored by Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra to promote literacy and enhance the lives of youth in the community.
