Two students from St. Theresa Catholic School, Zarek Thomas, third-grade, and Joleen Ferguson, fifth-grade, received the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra “On Your Way” award for May.

Thomas’ favorite book is “Harry Potter, Chamber of Secrets.” About reading, he said, “Reading is fun because it helps me learn.” His teacher, Mrs. Winslow, said, “Zarek has made some great strides in his reading ability and attitude. His reading progress has boosted his self-confidence enormously.”

Ferguson’s favorite book is “Amelia Bedelia.” On reading she said, “I like to read funny and scary books.” Her teacher, Amy Arrington, said, “Joleen has worked very hard this year. She has improved immensely. I am very proud of her.”

The On Your Way award is presented each month to elementary students who have worked very hard to improve their reading skills. Promoting literacy in youth is one of the missions of Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra. Each recipient is awarded a certificate, a $25 gift certificate for a local bookstore and a special presentation at his or her school.
