Soroptomist International of Tahoe Sierra awards scholarships

In celebrating the culmination of a successful fund-raising year, Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra recently honored youth of the community for their outstanding achievements during the past school year.

The club mission, “Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra strengthens and enhances youth and women in all facets of their lives by providing the tools necessary for them to be contributing human beings,” was realized in June when the club awarded $4,550 in scholarships to local students. Fourteen students were recognized at a breakfast meeting of club members, parents and school officials. Outstanding middle school students were awarded $50 each in recognition of their achievements. Recipients included Amy Jones and Colin Stromberg of Kingsbury Middle School, Elyse Jones and Marcale Jones of South Tahoe Middle School and Katie Harding of St. Theresa School. In addition, Bradley Ross and Brittan Ramsey of South Tahoe High School were each recognized with a $100 award.

Academic scholarships were awarded to outstanding seniors and to Lake Tahoe Community College students. Graham St. Michel and Amirhossenn Misaghi, $800, and Sidonie Xavier and Tammy Cowen, $1,000, South Tahoe High; Emily Cox, $1,000, George Whittell High; Andreya Brownell, $400, Lisa Lee, $600, and Gladys Aguilar, $400 renewable scholarship from last year, Lake Tahoe Community College.
