Soroptomist names On Your Way award winners

Tahoe Daily Tribune

Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra wishes to congratulate Mary Buffington and Angel Zaragoza, third-grade students at Sierra House Elementary School, for being the recipients of the On Your Way Award for January.

Buffington’s teacher, Miss Cole, said, “Mary has improved her entire attitude toward school. She made a decision to be hardworking in all her academic endeavors and it shows. Her reading skills have soared since the beginning of the school year.”

Her favorite books are the “Horrible Harry” series. When asked what she like about reading, she replied, “It’s fun to learn from books.”

Zaragoza’s favorite book is “Choose Me.” He said that he likes to read because “It helps me learn.” Mrs. Kiger, his teachers, said, “Angel has spent a lot of time working on improving his reading skills and as a result, he has.”

The On Your Way Award is presented each month to elementary students who have worked very hard to improve his or her reading skills. Promoting literacy in youth is one of the missions of Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra. Each recipient receives a document of award, a $25 gift certificate for a bookstore and a special presentation at their school. Soroptimist also will donate “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett to the Sierra House School library in the award recipient’s names.
