South Lake residents can recycle Christmas trees

Both city and county South Lake Tahoe residents will have the opportunity to recycle their Christmas trees beginning Dec. 30 and continuing through Jan. 10.

“The program is very easy for people who want to recycle their Christmas trees and save space in the landfill,” said Ginger Huber, El Dorado County Environmental Management. “Recyclers should put their Christmas tree, stripped of all decorations and stands, next to their garbage can on their regular pick up day. Trucks will collect them and take the trees to an area where they will be chipped and stored for later use.”

Trees great than 6-feet in height should be broken into smaller pieces, as the collection trucks cannot accommodate lengths great than 6-feet.

South Lake Tahoe Parks Superintendent Steve Weiss noted that more than 30,000 trees have been recycled since the program began in 1992.

Trees must have tinsel, decoration and nails removed prior to collection. Trees which have not been stripped will be collected with the regular refuse and taken to the landfill.

“It is very important to remove all metal objects from the trees to protect the tree chipping machines,” Weiss said.

As with the regular refuse collection, residents should wait until the night before to place Christmas trees with their refuse cans in the driveway, behind any snow berms.
