A 61-year-old South Lake Tahoe man died Sunday when his 1994 Isuzu Rodeo hit a power pole on Lake Tahoe Boulevard, snapping it in three places.

His identity was not released until next of kin could be identified, California Highway Patrol reported.

Witnesses told CHP Officer Wayne Tillman that the motorist drifted out of his lane as he headed northbound near Sawmill Pond. No skid marks marked the road and no other vehicles were involved.

The victim was not wearing a seatbelt, according to authorities.

South Lake Tahoe and Lake Valley fire units performed cardio pulmonary resuscitation on the unidentified man, who suffered from internal injuries.

The accident, which happened at 3:30 p.m., backed up traffic about a quarter mile south of Industrial Avenue.

A Calstar helicopter responded to the scene but was called off. The man was transported by ground ambulance to Barton Memorial Hospital.

Sierra Pacific Power reported no outage as a result of the accident.
