South Lake Tahoe man suspected in fatal DUI

Kyle Magin / North Lake Tahoe Bonanza

A South Lake Tahoe man has been arrested in connection with the death of one Incline Village resident and the severe injury of another.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, Joel F. Dailey, 39, turned himself in to Washoe County Sheriff’s deputies in Reno last week after blood results showed Dailey was intoxicated when he hit two Guatemalan immigrants with his pickup in Incline Village on Nov. 4.

Dailey allegedly struck Rudy Diaz, 30, and his girlfriend, Maribel Oroxom, 29, at a low rate of speed at the intersection of Southwood Boulevard and Highway 28.

Oroxom died from trauma sustained during the accident, and Diaz spent nearly a month in the hospital recovering from head trauma, authorities said.

Luis Caceres, a immigration advocate in Reno who is familiar with the case, said Diaz is living with family in the Kings Beach area and recovering.

Diaz could not be reached for comment.

NHP Sgt. John Schilling confirmed Dailey turned himself in after his blood-test results were released.

Dailey was booked at the Washoe County Jail on Feb. 27 and was released on $50,000 bail the same day, Schilling said.

Elliot Sattler, the Washoe County assistant district attorney who is prosecuting the case, said Dailey is being charged with driving under the influence causing death and driving under the influence causing severe injury. Both charges carry up to 20 years in prison.

Dailey will be arraigned on the charges at the Sparks Justice Court on March 14.
