WHERE: Bijou Park

With the holiday season comes traditions. It’s big meals, getting together with family, gathering around a television and watching football, festive decorations — and sometimes a grown man dressing like a turkey and going for a run. For more than 30 years, the City of South Lake Tahoe has hosted its annual Turkey Trot 5k. The tradition returns to Bijou Park Saturday, Nov. 21.
“It’s a party atmosphere,” said city recreation department manager Lauren Thomaselli. “People are always in a really festive mood.”
The race, hosted by the recreation department and Epic Tahoe Adventures, will start at 10 a.m. with participants encouraged to dress up. There will also be a shorter kids run.
“The last couple years people have had great costumes,” race organizer Sean Sweeney of Epic Tahoe said.
The course will loop around the park and the nearby Bijou Golf Course with a finish near the bike park.
“It’s a beautiful run,” Thomaselli said.
Organizers will award prizes to the top three finishers in each age group. First place will receive a Thanksgiving turkey, second place a pie and third place a caramel apple.
Prizes will also be given to the runners with the best costume and “hardest costume to run in.”
Day-of registration will open at 9 a.m. at Bijou Park. Registration for the Kids Fun Run is $15, the 5k will be $30 for youth and adults 12 and up.
More information and online registration can be found at http://www.epictahoe.com. Race proceeds benefit a city recreation department scholarship fund which assists youth in covering the costs of programing.
