South Shore Earth Day events kickoff Sunday

Earth Day, April 22, has a slew of activities scheduled at the South Shore as part of the call to raise awareness about the local and global environment.

Beach cleanups, a combined golf and animal/plant spotting event and the annual Earth Day festival will educate and entertain people about the issues regarding today's environmental issues.

Earth Day Beach Cleanup

Sunday, April 19 from 1-3 p.m.

Lakeview Commons — El Dorado Beach, South Lake Tahoe

The League to Save Lake Tahoe will conduct a community beach cleanup at Lakeview Commons – El Dorado Beach. Bags, gloves and snack bars will be provided, while volunteers are recommended to bring reusable water bottles, sunscreen and their own gloves if they like. Volunteers of all ages are welcome.

Local's Day, BioBlitz/Earth Day

Lake Tahoe Golf Course, 2500 Emerald Bay Road, South Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe Golf Course will host its annual Local's Day with a BioBlitz/Earth Day event.

BioBlitz is a species-counting contest started by Audubon International to create awareness among golfers and community members about the environmental value of habitats supported by golf courses.

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the general public can chip in a $15 donation and play 18 holes. Proceeds go to the Sierra House Growing Domes. Each golfer is asked to bring back at least one animal or plant species they find while playing golf that day.

From 5 to 8 p.m., adults and youth can count species and play foot golf for free.

From 6 to 9 p.m., all participants in the BioBlitz/Local's Day are invited to the Earth Day Clubhouse reception, where kids can help themselves to an ice cream sundae bar, and adults can enjoy appetizers, Happy Gilmore Rum Runners and other drink specials while everyone's species/plant lists are collected.

South Lake Earth Day Festival

Saturday, April 25 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Bijou Community Park, Al Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe

Earth Day Festival activities include local live music, educational booths and vendors and a Kid Zone with recycle-themed arts and crafts, face painting and other activities. Food and drinks will be available to purchase, along with tickets for the Earth Day raffle.
