The 2015-16 ski season won’t officially come to a close at the South Shore until Sunday, April 24, but golf season is already underway.

Lake Tahoe Golf Course in Meyers fully opened to the public Monday, April 18, and additional South Shore courses are set to follow in coming weeks.

Most courses are reporting rough, fairways and greens in excellent shape. Early snow that stayed on the ground through much of the winter protected courses, and relatively mild temperatures following the snowmelt have also contributed to a verdant spring, according to course operators.

“The course is in incredibly good shape,” said Kevin Sommerfeld, general manager at Lake Tahoe Golf Course, adding that about 100 people made it out for opening day this week.

The course will continue to offer footgolf, which combines soccer with golf concepts, after 5 p.m. daily, and Sommerfeld said he expects to hold family nights with footgolf, live music and a pasta bar on Fridays during the summer. The course will also offer discounted greens fees in April and will hold a locals’ day May 11.

Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, which is set to the open to the public Monday, May 9, will also offer area residents special early season deals. Edgewood will provide local discounts on its first three days of operation, said Randy Fox, the course’s director of golf.

Edgewood’s 18 holes made it through winter ready to play.

“Oh, it’s in great shape,” Fox said of the Stateline course. “Last year was the best ever, and this year might be better than that.”

Construction of a new lodge at the course won’t impact golf this summer, Fox added.

David Beeman, general manager and co-owner of Tahoe Paradise Golf Course, echoed Fox and Sommerfeld’s statements about conditions on the links to start the season. Tahoe Paradise is scheduled to open April 29.

“It’s really good,” Beeman said of the Meyers course. “It’s probably the best it’s come out of winter in a long time.”

The City of South Lake Tahoe has not announced an opening date for the city’s nine-hole Bijou Golf Course.
