South Shore Kmart going big

Keeping in tune with improvements to the community, South Lake Tahoe’s largest shopping center, Kmart, is planning to upgrade to a Mini Big-K.

Although specific plans are still tentative as to what the remodeling will entail, manager Jerry Lockhart said a pantry will be added to offer food items, such as dairy products, to its customers.

Beginning sometime in May and lasting for about eight weeks, departments will be shifted around and organized to create a more airy atmosphere, allowing products to be more easily seen and accessed.

Kmart’s corporate office has yet to specify what departments or items will be eliminated or added, but did decide to discontinue its lay-away program due to a lack of storage space.

Duane Wallace, executive director of the South Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce, expressed some concerns with that decision.

“Kmart can run their business as they see fit but there are a lot of single moms in this community that need the (lay-away) service,” Wallace said. “There is enough leakage of business that goes off the hill and to lose that service is disappointing.”

Overall, most residents are happy with Kmart’s intentions.

“It will be so nice to have a remodeled store,” said Laura Bradford. “I like things that are open and bright and I hope it reflects that. It will also help spruce up the image of our community.”
