Several local Mexican restaurants are getting ready for Cinco de Mayo celebrations by hanging up Mexican flags outside their doors and stacking up on tequila to celebrate their Mexican heritage and pride.

With May 5 coming up, margaritas, burritos, tacos, food and drink specials and parties will make this year’s holiday an unforgettable one.

“The Cantina Bar and Grill” at Emerald Bay Road will have a beach-themed Cinco de Mayo party with a lottery and several beach-related prize giveaways from the Corona girls, who will attend the party between 7 and 9 p.m.

“We expect to have a really busy day,” Cantina waitress Destiny Lexa said. “Each alcoholic drink will get you one ticket and the chance to win one of the prices of the lottery.”

“Our grand prize will be a beach cruiser bike this year,” Cantina manager Evan Williams said.

The Cantina will serve food and drink specials all day, with $3 Coronas and $5 margaritas. Hombre, cholo and vegetable burritos will be priced at $7 each.

Other local restaurants, such as La Promesa, participate in the “Festival 5 de Mayo” party at Heavenly Mountain Ski Resort.

“We will have a tent up at Heavenly Village and sell food and drinks,” said Sofia Gallegos of La Promesa.

Cover for the Heavenly Mountain Cinco de Mayo Festival costs $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

Another bigger place to celebrate will be the Cabo Wabo Cantina and Restaurant in Harveys Casino, which will host a party. The restaurant offers a large choice of several tequila brands and Mexican food.

The Montbleu Casino Resort & Spa will host a “$500 Taco Eat-Off Challenge” starting at noon Saturday at the Cafe del Soul. Whoever eats the most tacos in 10 minutes will win $500 in cash. Cafe del Soul will also offer 99-cent Tacos and 99-cent margaritas from 1-6 p.m.
