One wild inning didn’t keep South Tahoe pitcher Alex Potnick from the objective on Friday night in Gardnerville.

Potnick overcame five first-inning free passes to pitch the South Tahoe 13-15 Babe Ruth All-Stars past Carson Valley 6-5 in a state-qualifying tournament at Lampe Park.

As a result, South Tahoe needs only one more win in the four-day tournament to advance to state. South Tahoe meets Truckee at 3 p.m. Saturday for a state berth. The loser will need to win an 11 a.m. game on Sunday to earn the tournament’s second qualifying spot into state.

“Potnick gutted it up,” said South Tahoe assistant coach Richard Kreager of his hurler’s 127-pitch effort.

Potnick didn’t walk a batter after the first inning and finished with nine strikeouts.

South Tahoe survived a two-run Carson Valley rally, including an inside-the-park home run, in the final inning.
