The Women’s Opportunity Award is a Soroptimist cash award designed to assist a woman, who is head of household, to further her education and improve her ability to support her family.

Karen Jaimes was selected by Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra to receive its WOA Award of $2,500. As a young mother and high school senior, Jaimes has worked very hard in the pursuit of her dream to become an engineer. While raising her young son, she has continued her high school education at South Tahoe High School, where she participates in the Young Parents Program and AVID classes. She has maintained a high grade point average while taking many AP courses, including AP Calculus, AB and BC, as well as AP English (her second language) and AP Spanish.

Jaimes has been accepted into the engineering program at Sacramento State University for the fall. Having been born in Mexico, her financial concerns are greater than most; she is not eligible for state and federal financial aid. She is currently working about 20 hours a week and will continue to work while in college.

Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra applauds its WOA winner and wishes her every success in achieving all her goals. We find her to be a real inspiration and role model for anyone facing adversities.
