South Tahoe High School to present ‘The Royal Family’
The Tahoe Arts and Design Academy will present “The Royal Family” at South Tahoe High School from March 23 through April 1.
The show, written by George Kaufman and Edna Ferber, is a three-act comedy about the first family of theater. The story is a parody of Drew Barrymore’s great-grandparents, the Barrymores of Broadway fame. Like the Barrymores, the Cavendish clan is dedicated to theater.
“The Royal Family” first opened in New York City in 1927 and became an enduring favorite with characters with larger-than-life personalities and real struggles. The story is about family and devotion, choices in life and happiness.
Family matriarch, Fanny, who holds the family together with an iron will, will be played by Anna Ripoli; her daughter, Julie, the prima donna actress, will be played by Courtney Reece; the ostentatious brother, Tony, will be played by Alec Niven; Julie’s conflicted daughter, Gwen, will be played by Kori Zwijacz; the cash-strapped uncle, Herbert Dean, will be played by Jack Percival; his conniving wife, Kitty, will be played by Melissa Trimble; and the honorary family member, their agent, Wolfe, will be played by Emery Mulligan. The show will be directed by Nannette Niven, and Drake Niven is in charge of set design and construction. Candi Lincoln created the original artwork for the poster.
“The Royal Family” will be performed March 23-24 and 30-31 at 7 p.m. and March 25 and April 1 at 2 p.m at the TADA stage at South Tahoe High School, 1735 Lake Tahoe Blvd. Tickets will be available at the door and cost $10 for adults and $5 for students. Admission is free for PABA coupon holders and Super ASB holders, space allowing.
