South Tahoe Middle School band accepts offer to play Disneyland
The 51 members of the South Tahoe Middle School Symphonic Band and musical director Linda Kurek were notified recently of the band’s acceptance to the Disney Magic Music Day on June 3, 4, and 5.
During the course of the three days the students will have the opportunity to perform at Disneyland in this invitation-only event. The youths have put incredible time and effort into attaining this goal, which promises to afford them with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. They are proud and excited.
“Now comes the time for the parents and community to put forth some effort. This opportunity, of course, comes with a price tag. We are estimating the cost per child at $350,” said Lynn Corey, fund-raising coordinator. “The parents were given a ‘heads up’ early in the year regarding the possibility of making this trip, and were informed they would be responsible for a minimum of $200 each. We are looking at raising approximately $7,600 to cover the balance between now and the end of March. We’re optimistic, but realize we’ve got some serious work ahead.”
In addition, 10 of the symphonic band members were selected in January to be in the Northern California Honor Band.
Organizers are in the process of planning several fund-raisers and the students are enthusiastic about doing their part. Because of the limited amount of time involved they also are looking to the community for financial assistance. Any dollar amount and organization or individual would donate would be greatly appreciated.
The fund-raisers include:
-Sees Candy Sale. Candy may be purchased at $1 per bar at Mail Boxes, Etc. at the “Y” and at Stateline.
-Disney Dance for STMS Students. March 9 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the STMS Multipurpose Room. The cost is $5 per student.
-Family Bingo Night. March 23 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the STMS Multipurpose Room. The cost is $1 per card and lots of raffle prizes will be given available.
-Community Donations. Donations may be sent to STMS Music Department, 2940 Lake Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150. Checks should be made payable to STMS Music.
For more information contact Lynn Corey at (530) 542-7501, days or (530) 577-5128, evenings or Linda Kurek at (530) 541-6404 at STMS.
