About 100 people attended a Memorial Day ceremony Monday to remember and honor men and women who died while serving their country the military.

The observance was held at the Happy Homestead Cemetery and featured several speeches from community leaders.

Speakers included Mayor Hal Cole, El Dorado County Supervisor Norma Santiago and both the commander and vice commander of American Legion Post 795.

Among other things, Cole talked about how to best honor the country’s heroes.

“I believe it is by cherishing what they fought for,” he said, adding. “Let’s be thankful for this beautiful day. Let’s be thankful for each other’s company. But most importantly, let’s be thankful for our freedom.”
