South Tahoe schools compete at spelling

Nail-biting-action at Friday’s spelling bee left four teams consisting of third and fourth-graders tied for first place.

At the end of two tie-breaking rounds Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School emerged as the first-place winner, with Bijou Community and Sierra House going into a sudden death round. Tiebreaker words consisted of hallucination, aardvark and locomotion.

Sierra House emerged as the second-place winner while Bijou took third place.

In first place among the fifth grade teams was Sierra House while Bijou Community took second and the magnet school took third.

The South Shore Spelling Bee was sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe and the Lake Tahoe Unified School District.
