With the girls’ 3200-meter race in progress, the storm everyone was expecting finally arrived in Reno on Saturday during the Reed Sparks Rotary Invitational. The men’s 4×400 meter team was warming up and runners Shelby McIntyre and Kira Smith were on the track as hail began to fall.

The team came up to head coach Geoff Nelson, depressed about the hail falling, he said. But his team pulled together and they responded, he said.

“My team is on the fence chanting for Shelby McIntyre and Kira Smith,” Nelson said about his team’s reaction after the pep talk. “It just shows that they’re hungry and they wanted it. They’re tough.

“I was really proud to be their coach at that point.”

The Vikings showed a lot of heart, and it transfer to the track at times. Brandon Cramer finished third in the 300-meter hurdles and sixth in the 110-meter hurdles. Their boys 4×400 team finished 11th, and Greg Baghdikian was 11th in triple jump. Connor Henderson was fourth in the mile, and Tyler Myers was 12th in the boys’ 3200-meter. As a team, the boys finished 15th.

On the girls’ side, freshman Danielle Cohn finished fourth in the 400-meter dash and second in the 40-yard dash. McIntyre and Smith were 10th and 15th in the girls’ 3200 meter, respectively. The girls’ 4×800-meter team was fourth. As a team, the girls finished 10th.
