South Tahoe wants to build on Zephyr League title

Steve Yingling, Tribune sports editor

Defending its Zephyr League title is the focus of the South Tahoe High swim team, but the Vikings may be ready to make some noise at the regional and state levels.

Third-year coach Jerry Erickson welcomes back most of last year’s boys’ team that won the league title, and several solid swimmers have been added.

“This group should be even stronger, but who knows what will happen. It depends on what other teams have,” Erickson said.

Three-fourths of the Vikings’ state-qualifying relay team return: David Wise, Joe Stanton and Evan Rabbetts.

Rabbetts, who placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke at the 2008 regionals, should be in contention to qualify for state as an individual.

“He’s gotten so much better. His 200 free and 100 breast are already close to being state qualifying times,” Erickson said. “We expect big things from him.”

Wise was only four places from qualifying for state in the 500 freestyle last year.

The trio will get some assistance from sophomore Luca Genasci and freshman Francisco Marin.

Erickson expects the girls’ program to really take off a few years from now, but the present team still has a major talent in Bratton. As a freshman, Bratton nearly made the state grade in the 100 backstroke, finishing fifth at regionals. She also was eighth in the 200 freestyle.

Also returning for the girls are Kasey Delacruz and Amy Wilson.

Clara Stewart, Alexis Smith and Rachel Higginbotham are freshmen who Erickson believes will make an impact.
