Special day in store for young anglers on Saturday

Saturday isn’t Christmas, but it will be the next-best day for the young anglers of the South Shore.

The annual Sawmill Pond Kids’ Free Fishing Day is scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon.

Anglers 14 years of age and younger are eligible to participate. Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters and the Optimist Club of South Tahoe are putting on the event and will provide loaner poles and tackle as well as fishing cleaning. Lures won’t be permitted.

Adults are welcome but can’t do any actual fishing. They are, however, advised to place their chairs and coolers about 10 feet back from the pond to give children room to fish.

Food, soft drinks and raffle prizes will be provided.

To ensure plenty of fish for the youngsters on Saturday, Sawmill Pond is closed to all fishing on Thursday and Friday.
