Sports Briefs: Pop Warner registration July 19
Thursday, July 19, is the final day to register your child for the 2012 South Tahoe Pop Warner football and cheerleading season. Meet the coaches, get measured for uniforms and receive raffle tickets. This will be the last opportunity for cheerleaders to register, as uniforms are being ordered shortly afterward. Any football players that sign up after this date will jeopardize playing at the beginning of the season.
Registration will take place from 5-8 p.m. at The Sportsman, located by the Grocery Outlet, at 2358 Lake Tahoe Blvd.
The South Tahoe Amateur Hockey Association will be holding travel team tryouts for all age groups on Tuesday, July 24, and Wednesday, Aug. 1. Mite and Squirt Tryouts will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and PeeWee and Bantam tryouts will be on the ice from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Tryout fees cost $30. Checks should be made payable to STAHA. Each child may attend both dates for this fee. All players must have a current 2012-13 USA Hockey registration. To get one, visit http://www.usahockeyregistration.com. Each child’s registration can also be updated online. Bring a copy of the completed form for STAHA records to the tryouts.
All players new to the Tahoe Grizzlies must bring a copy of his or her birth certificate. Additional paperwork and STAHA registration forms will be available at tryouts for completion.
Former South Tahoe High School varsity baseball coach Matt Tillson, with help from current and former varsity players, will conduct a youth baseball camp at Kahle Community Park from July 23-27. This camp will include instruction on the fundamentals of batting, throwing, catching, pitching, base running and fielding. Participants need to bring lunch, water bottle, sunscreen, bat and a glove each day.
The camp is for boys and girls 8 to 12 years old. It will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day and costs $125. For more information or to register, call Kahle Community Center at 775-586-7271.
A five-day pole vault camp and track camp will be run by the Lake Tahoe Track Club July 16-20 at the Community Youth Sports Complex, which is located behind South Tahoe Middle School according to a press release from organizers of the event.
The pole vault camp will be led by Paul Heglar and Chris Moore, for ages 12-18. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and cost $150 for each athlete, and $350 with hotel for the week. The five-hour days will include video analysis, functional training techniques, conditioning, event-specific drills and vaulting. Athletes will receive a camp T-shirt and written report card.
The track camp will coincide with the pole vault camp at the Community Youth Sports Complex during the week. The camp, for ages 8-14 years old, will run from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and cost $150.
According to a press release from camp organizer, Anthony Davis, the camp is designed to improve the cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, strength and energy level of each student to prepare them for participation in a particular season sports program. Focus will be placed on learning the proper techniques for running, sprinting, speed, agility, power and stretching to prevent injuries.
Participants will be asked to express their critical thinking and writing skills in quizzes and a one-page essay about any type of sporting event they are involved. Class will close with a six-a-thon competition assessment, handout samples of year round health and conditioning workouts.
