Babe Ruth season opener produces a shutout

The Mariners defeated the Giants 11-9 in the opening week of South Tahoe Babe Ruth baseball May 4 at Todd Fields as four Mariners batters scored two runs apiece and the team enjoyed even scoring across all six innings.

Starting off to a 2-2 tie in the first inning, the Giants fell behind with a scoreless second, while the Mariners poured it on late with a five-run fifth inning.

Josh Swanick picked up two hits and scored once for the Giants and Nick Heng also scored twice, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the red-hot Mariners. The Mariners got two runs from Cody Harrington, Jay Sandness, Jacob Hash and Spencer Swearingen.

Rangers 13, Yankees 4

The Rangers picked up an opening-day win over the Yankees behind two hits — one a double and the other a home run — and two runs scored by Kevin Schlange.

Jason Holland had a single and scored a run, R.J. Gardner scored twice, Kyle Price had a double and two scores and Nick Spano and Marty Rahbek each scored two runs in the winning effort.

A’s 19, Cubs 0

The A’s got off to a roaring start with a shutout of the Cubs.

After failing to score in the first inning, the A’s unloaded with a five-run third and a six-run sixth inning.

Dan Tinlin hit a single and scored four runs, while Ryan Gosh hit two singles and scored three for the A’s. Mike Oliva hit a single and scored three runs.

Reds 8, Red Sox 4

The Reds’ Joey O’Malley connected for a single and a double and scored once as the Reds beat the Red Sox.

Cody Reeder had a double and scored twice and teammate Ryan Woods hit a double and scored one run in the effort.

For the Red Sox, Nathan Garofalos scored twice and hit a triple and a single, Danny Jolley hit two singles and Buck Pershing hit a home run.
