Buchholz, Hoefer lead Vikings, Pietzke paces Incline at Reed Invitational
September 8, 2018
South Tahoe junior Carissa Buchholz picked up right where she left off last year, by winning her first cross country meet of the season.
Buchholz, the defending 3A Nevada state cross country champion, set a personal best in winning the 4,000-meter event at the Reed Invitational in Sparks. Buchholz finished 18 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor in 15 minutes, 34 seconds at Shadow Mountain Park.
Buchholz and junior teammate Eliana Carney were the only two Viking girls to compete in the varsity race. Carney finished 28th in a field of 91 runners in a time of 18:33.
Vikings senior Christopher Hoefer led the boys' effort finishing 25th out of 122 runners.
Hoefer set a personal best by about 30 seconds with a time of 14:46.
The Vikings boys finished 11th out of 14 scoring teams.

Also for the Vikings boys, sophomore Layton Sweeney was 59th (15:43), senior Calvin Holmes was 102nd (17:13), junior Gavin Breen was 107th (17:35) and freshman Raymond Charley was 111th (18:10).
Overall, 26 schools participated in the meet.
Incline was lead by Niklas Pietzke, who won a thrilling varsity race.
Pietzke was in fourth after the first lap, third after the second lap and would end up passing the last pair of runners to win the race by four seconds in 15:04. His time would have been 32nd best in the varsity race, but first among 2A schools and second among small schools behind a Sierra Lutheran runner.
Also competing for Incline were sophomore Zach Homola (22nd, 16:57), and seniors Dillon Jenkins (97th, 19:22) and Brent Wolf (128th, 20:45). One hundred sixty six runners participated.
Incline next will compete Friday, Sept. 14, at North Tahoe. South Tahoe next will run at the Frogtown Invitational Saturday, Sept. 15, in Angels Camp, California.
