First game for women’s hockey team today
February 28, 2003
The Lake Tahoe Women’s Ice Hockey Association team will compete in its first ‘real’ game against the Reno women’s team Friday afternoon at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena after many practices and even a few scrimmages against local men’s teams.
As reported last month in the Tribune, the South Lake Tahoe women’s team was searching for a name on the eve of facing off against area competition. The team has chosen it: Tahoe Blizzard.
The Tahoe Blizzard will meet Reno’s Silver Rush on the ice at 5:15 p.m. Attendance is free of charge and spectators are encouraged.
The team is made up of a wide variety of ages and levels of experience, said team member Julianne Wilson.
“There are at least 18 of us committed to this, ranging in age from 16-45,” Wilson said. “We also have a big experience range, and it can be hard to play as a team like that, but we’ll get it together and hopefully we’ll improve.
“We’ve been practicing every Friday night since October, but this is our first real game,” she added. “The more ice time you get, the better you are.”

Wilson said more games will be scheduled in the future for the Tahoe Blizzard. The team is also looking for local businesses which might be interested in providing some sponsorship. Anyone interested in sponsoring the team is encouraged to call Jennifer Jespersen at 541-3995 or Julianne Wilson at 544-4807.
