Forfeit win advances South Tahoe boys tennis to regional championship
October 9, 2014
The South Tahoe boys tennis team finished the season in second place in the Div. I-A Northern League standings — and caught a break in the tournament. The Vikings advanced to the Div. I-A regional championship with a forfeit victory over third-seeded Incline, a result that qualifies them for the NIAA state tournament.
South Tahoe (9-2) learned of the forfeit victory when the brackets were released last weekend. Instead of hosting Incline (7-4) on Thursday the Vikings advance to Friday's regional championship, where they will meet the winner of Thursday's match between top-seeded Truckee and fourth-seeded Fallon.
The Highlanders were forced to forfeit Thursday's match as the result of a class trip to Costa Rica that included more than half of their team. Incline's girls tennis team also forfeited its regional semifinal match.
South Tahoe concluded its regular season with a 16-2 win over North Tahoe on Friday at STHS courts. In the victory, 18 different players earned points and the Vikings took all six sets in the first and third round.
In singles play, South Tahoe won seven of nine sets. In the No. 1 spot the Vikings took two of three — Adam Jarrett won 6-2 in the first round, Lucas Demsar fell 4-6 in the second round and Bryin Schouten prevailed 6-1 in the last round.
In the No. 2 singles spot, three South Tahoe players delivered three wins — Louis Marin won 6-1, Gabe Tenocelotl prevailed 6-4 and Jonathan LaRue delivered a 6-3 victory. In the No. 3 position, Mickey Sullivan split the first two rounds 6-1, 1-6 and Matthew Barnett won 6-2 in the third round.
