Elevation Elite travel basketball program tips off in South Lake Tahoe

An AAU travel basketball program backed by South Tahoe High coaches is aiming to take hoops in South Lake Tahoe to the next level. Elevation Elite tips off its spring session at the start of next month, offering advanced competition, skills and training for area boys and girls in the third through eighth grade.

"We're trying to improve the South Tahoe basketball program in general, starting from the youngest age possible all the way through high school," said David Finnegan, one of the creators of the club. "It's a need here, especially for those who want to get better at basketball."

Headed up by Vikings' coaches Finnegan and Joby Cefalu, Elevation Elite's 2016 spring session runs April 4 to June 18. The schedule features weekly practices Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at local gyms from 6-7:30 p.m. with none during spring break.

"To develop kids at a young age and get them to learn the fundamentals will help the high school greatly," Finnegan said. "If the kids learn the fundamentals at an early age, the high school team will be able to focus on team basketball."

The team is also scheduled to play five weekends of tournaments, including two in the Tahoe Basin. Elevation Elite's tentative schedule includes Above the Rim (April 23-24), Hardwood Hoops (April 30-May 1) and Nor Cal Challenge (May 14-15) at Hardwood Palace in Rocklin, California, the South Lake Tahoe Memorial Day Tournament (May 28-30) and the Lake Tahoe Championships (June 17-19).

An Elevation Elite team of 6th-8th graders has already hit the hardwood for four tournaments. Last weekend at Incline, the local squad went 3-0 after taking the floor against tough competition in Sacramento for three weekends.

"We struggled in the first couple tournaments we had down in Sacramento, but every week we saw improvements with the kids," Finnegan said.

The total fee for the 2016 spring session is $275, which includes tournament entry fees and uniforms. Payment plans are available.
