NOGALES, Ariz. — The South Tahoe All-Stars found competition tough at the Little League Intermediate 50/70 Division West Regional tournament. The local team of 12 and 13 year olds representing South Tahoe National Little League and Nevada managed to break through for a win before their season came to an end at the tournament held July 18-25.

“We have never faced this level of competition,” South Tahoe All-Stars assistant coach Pradip Patel said. “We came together as a team and everyone had a great time.”

South Tahoe’s win at the tournament came against Oregon’s Grants Pass National, a 14-2 victory on July 19. In pool play, the All-Stars suffered defeats against host Nogales National, Arizona (Copper Hills) and Hawaii (Central East Maui).

The local All-Stars advanced to the bracket as the seventh seed, setting up a rematch against second-seeded Hawaii. In the second meeting in three days between the teams, South Tahoe fell 7-0 to end its tournament run despite not striking out and delivering an error-free performance.

“Despite our record, all in all it was a successful trip,” Patel said. “The coaches and players made new friendships that will truly outlast the win-loss column.”

Hawaii went onto win the regional title with an unbeaten record in seven games. In the championship Monday, July 25, Hawaii beat Southern California (Metropolitan) 6-3 to advance to the Little League Intermediate 50/70 World Series July 31-Aug. 7 in Livermore, California.

The West Regional tournament also featured teams from Alaska (Knik), Northern California (Canyon Creek) and Washington (South Snohomish). The Intermediate 50/70 Division was introduced by Little League in 2010 for 12- and 13-year-old players, and features a 50-foot pitching distance and 70-foot basepaths.

South Tahoe’s roster featured Andrew Lehmann, Cameron Lehmann, Deven Sukha, Eric Vasser, Isaiah Daley, Jaden Aquino, Kade Koeppen, Kyle Clark, Levi Shambaugh, Miles Hamburg, Travis Lee and Ty Loughlin. Patel and Albert Aquino coached alongside manager Mark Lehmann.
