LTCC women continue GVC dominance, beat Butte

Graciela Palencia had two goals and an assist and Kenya Maltase had a goal and two assists Tuesday to lead the 10th ranked Lake Tahoe Community College women's soccer team to a 4-0 Golden Valley Conference win at Butte College in Oroville.

The Maltase-Palencia connection was responsible for the first two goals, with Maltase playing a superb through ball for Palencia in the 40th minute. The two produced a similar exchange early in the second half to give the Lady Coyotes a more comfortable cushion.

With Butte's energy weakening, Maltase scored on a header off a driven cross from Melanie Ara in the 58th minute, then Palencia found Zareli Villa a few minutes later to complete the scoring.

Goalkeeper Claudia Janese and the team recorded their 13th shutout of the season and their ninth consecutive shutout.

The Lady Coyotes still have not been scored upon in league this season while accumulating 55 goals.

"This was not our best game by any means, and in fact may have been one of worst in quite some time, at least energy-wise in the first half," said Coyotes head coach Jeremy Evans. "Butte had a lot to do with that. I would like to blame the heat and the grass field because we don't train on grass, but the reality is Butte wanted it more. They out-toughed us in the first half, almost won every 50-50 ball, and just brought more energy to the game. They should've scored and we were lucky they didn't. We made a few adjustments at halftime and fortunately came out with better energy in the second half."
