New creation works for Herschman

Steve Yingling

ZEPHYR COVE – As the 22nd annual Tahoe Tennis Classic was winding down Sunday afternoon, players couldn’t help but join in on the ribbing.

Although the weather was ideal for a barbecue, this ribbing wasn’t the variety that leaves your hands greasy.

No, Classic co-tournament director Hersh Herschman was the focus of this “barbecue.”

Herschman added a division to this year’s tournament – a super century class – for doubles teams with a combined age of 120 or more.

Naturally, Herschman and doubles partner Butch Stillman of Temecula won the new class, defeating Barry Eckenroth and Bill Cover, 7-5, 6-4.

Call it creative management or a home-spun championship. Either way, Herschman was humble in celebration.

“It’s all about picking the right partner,” Herschman said of Stillman, a former Lake Tahoe resident.

The three-day tournament attracted former national champions, young prodigies and former professional and collegiate stars from other sports.

Despite the tough competition, several other local teams fared well.

Vicki and Andy Veris rallied to win the mixed B consolation title. The Stateline couple dropped the first set to South Shore’s Ken Sigel and Karla Lentz but came back to win the next two sets 6-3.

After the one-sided loss in the first set, the Verises knew they couldn’t go on playing the same way.

“We had to change something because they owned us in the first set,” Andy said.

With Sigel and Lentz well aware of their opponents’ serve-and-volley style, a tactical change made all of the difference.

“We decided to stay back and try to outwit them,” Vicki said.

It worked.

The local pair of Joyce Youngs and Bob Beut captured the mixed A consolation title with a 6-4, 6-2 dispatching of David Jaehnig and Sue Beaumonte and Julie Zeid and Janice Levesque of the South Shore lost to Joanie Koerner of Gardnerville and Peggy Twedt of Carson City 6-2, 2-6, 4-6 in the ladies’ consolation final.

Earlier in the afternoon, Levesque paired up with former Lakeland Village teaching pro Tom Barnes to compete for the mixed B championship.

But after rallying to win a three-set match to get into the final, the local team ran out of steam in the championship, losing to San Diego mother-and-son duo Libby and James Jaehnig, 6-1, 6-3.

“We had some great matches coming into the final,” said Barnes, a former tennis and wrestling coach at South Tahoe High. “It’s a pleasure coming to a tournament like this and neat to see people from all over the tennis world.”

Even though the Herschmans have been part of the tournament for 22 years, they saw a first on Sunday. The finalists in the men’s A and century divisions turned out to be the same two teams.

As a result, they agreed with tournament directors to play one match – a five-setter – to determine both titles.

Mark Peterson and Randy Houston of La Quinta didn’t need all five sets, downing Rich Taylor of Aptos and K.C. Jackson of Monterey, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. The loss prevented Taylor and Jackson from winning the men’s A division for a record third straight year.

“The people are really fun to be around and it’s a beautiful place … life is good,” Peterson said.
