Pack doesn’t have time to enjoy Cannon

RENO – The Nevada football players didn’t get a chance to have a painting party to spruce up their newest acquisition – the Fremont Cannon.

“It’s in the paint shop,” Nevada coach Chris Ault said Monday morning. “I don’t want to give them anything sharper than a crayon.

“Anytime you beat your in-state rival, it’s certainly a high. The bad thing is you have to forget about it and get ready for your next game.”

And that next opponent, Colorado State, is a good one. The Rams lost to Colorado and Minnesota, but Ault has high regard for them. He compares the Rams to Washington State, which hammered Nevada 55-21 two weeks ago.

“They are a different team,” Ault said. “They are not going to throw the ball (much). They are a power football team. It will be a great test for us. Our defense versus the run has to stand up.”

Senior defensive end Craig Bailey played one of the best games in his career with six tackles, including a sack, and a fumble recovery. His efforts won him the XBox Live WAC Defensive Player of the Week

Ault praised the work of punter Justin Bergendahl, who punted four times for a 52.8 average, including a career-high 70-yarder. He was the WAC’s top special teams performer last weekend.

“He pinned them down inside the 20 (a few times),” Ault said. “He did an excellent job. He had good hang time. He gets better every week.”

Bergendahl also averaged around 40 yards a kick against Washington State, but Nevada’s poor kick coverage resulted in some huge special teams plays by the Cougars.

Redshirt freshman Brett Jaekle had a bittersweet game. He did kick three field goals, but missed an extra point and an 18-yard field goal.

“He was inconsistent,” Ault said.

The Nevada coach said he didn’t consider replacing Jaekle during the UNLV game, nor does he plan on looking at other kickers this week in practice.
