Pop Warner teams go for West Coast titles

Two of South Lake Tahoe’s Pop Warner Junior Vikings’ football teams will represent the area in West Coast Division III Championship games on Saturday in Woodside, Calif.
The Junior Peewees (8-2), fresh of Sagebrush Division III title last Saturday, are scheduled to play the Mountain View Marauders at 9 a.m.
“Overall our effort was huge. The kids came out fired up,” said Junior Peewees coach Shawn Miller.
The 9-1 Peewees, who won a 6-0 defensive struggle last weekend against North Lake Tahoe to capture the Sagebrush Division III championship, will meet the Brentwood/Oakley Falcons at 1 p.m. Saturday at the same location.
“What a game to watch; it was a real battle. All the coaches and parents are very proud,” said Peewees coach David Slater, looking back on the nailbiter with North Lake Tahoe.
The Peewees’ defensive line, which was led by Zack Petray, Marshall Curtzwiler, Joebacci Zanetell, Hunter Lau, Jake Williams, Tanner McAvoy and Patrick, held North Lake Tahoe to 59 total yards. Williams and Tyler Nesbitt led the Peewees with six tackles.

Austin Buyak carried 14 times for 50 yards and scored the game’s only touchdown – a 3-yard fourth-quarter run – while Rigel Garman rushed 18 times for 65 yards.
Michael Nanzig led the Junior Peewees’ 20-8 victory over Feather River with a pair of rushing touchdowns. Preston Quick had six tackles, including two for losses; Jason Rogers made 2 1/2 sacks; Tanner Burghard had three tackles and two interceptions; and Erik Edwards recorded six tackles.
Annual Turkey Trot on Saturday
The annual Turkey Trot is Saturday morning at Bijou Community Park.
Age divisions begin for 3- and 4-year-olds and go up to 17 and over. First place in each age group collects a turkey, while runner-up and third receive a pumpkin pie.
Registration starts at 10:15 a.m., with racing commencing at 11 a.m. The cost is $3 and includes a hot dog lunch.
Last Buddy Werner registration Saturday
The final chance to sign up for the Buddy Werner Youth Ski League is Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena.
Racing is on weekends at Sierra-at-Tahoe. Eligible children should be at least 7 years old and 14 at the oldest and in the eighth grade.

High Sierra Peewees sweep Berkeley
The High Sierra Wild Peewees played the Berkeley Bulldogs twice last weekend, with High Sierra winning both Nor Cal hockey games by a combined score of 15-8.
On Saturday, Devyn Hotho scored three goals as the Wild beat Berkeley 6-5. Scott Vogelgesang had a goal and an assist for the Wild.
In the game on Sunday, High Sierra scored three first-period goals to take command of the game and eventually won 9-5 .
Evan Brown and Pete Marshall both scored in the opening period, with Marshall and Vogelgesang recorded assists. In the second period, High Sierra increased its lead to 7-2 aided by another goal from Vogelgesang.
High Sierra is 3-1 on the season and is tied for second in the Northern California Junior Hockey Association Peewee standings. The Wild host Santa Rosa Dec. 17-18 at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena.
