Shorthanded South Tahoe Viking volleyers split pair

The South Tahoe Vikings volleyers battled Friday and Saturday, Oct. 13 and 14, without two of their top players and split a pair of matches.
They lost Friday night 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 18-25, 25-23) to Elko on the road before bouncing back Saturday with a 3-1 (25-14, 22-25, 25-17, 25-10) victory over Spring Creek at South Tahoe.
In the absence of hitters McKenna Brewer (injured) and Sofia Hedqvist who is in Sweden playing for the national under 18 team, Hailey Naccarato and Navel Moses took on a larger role leading the Vikings in attacks.
They each had 10 kills against Elko and had 16 and 17, respectively, against Spring Creek. They also had eight and nine aces, respectively, in the two matches.
Also for the Vikings vs. Elko, Kaitlyn Racca made just one error while receiving 32 serves and also made 22 digs and Tyler Pevenage had 27 assists.
Against the Spartans, Jerra McLaughlin had five service aces, Pevanage had four aces and also 40 assists, Layne Hembree made three blocks and Naccarato made 26 digs.

The Vikings (18-8, 7-6 3A Northern) next will host Churchill at 6 p.m. Wednesday and would clinch a playoff spot with a victory. South Tahoe sits in sixth place in league and the top six teams reach playoffs. The Greenwave (4-9 3A Northern) is the closest team to the Vikings.
