Skier-boardercross event draws record number to Sierra-at-Tahoe

The United States of America Freeski and Snowboard Association's skier/boardercross races Sunday, Jan. 28, at Sierra-at-Tahoe drew a record number of participants.

One-hundred thirty-eight skiers and snowboarders stormed down the course set up on The Alley, a trail typically reserved for snowboard and freeski terrain parks, such as rails and jumps, but was closed until recently due to lack of snow. It's the first time the trail was used for the skier/boardercross event that is normally held on Smokey, on Sierra's backside.

The competitors were primarily from the USASA South Shore Series, but some came from the North Shore Series and the Unbound Series in Mammoth. These athletes are from all areas of Northern California, Mammoth, Carson City and Reno.

Athletes ages ranged from the 7-and-younger division up to the 60-and-older category.

The competition level was high with athletes trying to gain points to qualify for nationals at Copper Mountain, Colorado in the spring.

Between Lake Tahoe's North Shore and South Shore athletes, 16 age-group division titles were won. South Shore claimed 11 and the North Shore five.
