The South Tahoe boys soccer team celebrated its nine seniors on Tuesday with a big victory. The Vikings beat Dayton 6-0 on Senior Day at Viking Stadium, led by two goals from senior forward Mauro Aguayo.

South Tahoe (5-4-1, 5-3-1 I-A Northern) scored five of its six goals in the first half of Tuesday’s victory. Seniors accounted for all the Vikings’ first-half scoring — including Aguayo, who found the back of the net 19th and 40th minutes.

“It was nice to see Mauro get on the score sheet — and he did so in very strong fashion,” Vikings head coach Ben Hannah said. “He took the game seriously and fought hard.”

STHS forward Michal Lis opened the scoring in the eighth minute, finishing a breakaway with a right-footed shot. Lis assisted on a goal by Danny Lizaola three minutes later, sending in a low cross that the forward easily finished.

“They’ve been a unifying element, really brought out the character of the team — and really made it quite a bit of fun.”

Aguayo made it 3-0 in the 19th minute, and South Tahoe’s fourth goal came off a header from midfielder Chase Waterman in the 15 minutes later. Aguayo scored his second just before halftime, capping a first half where the Vikings had a 20-0 advantage in shots over Dayton (0-11, 0-9).

In the second half, South Tahoe focused on possession and tactics while maintaining its lead over the Dustdevils. Midfielder Johnny Medina capped the scoring for the Vikings with a goal in the 69th minute.

“We were working on possessing the ball with limited touches,” Hannah said. “Our first touch needed improvement, and the boys sharpened it up after the half.”

South Tahoe’s seniors were taken out with 10 minutes left in the match and honored with a ceremony after the win. In addition to Tuesday’s four goal scorers, the Vikings’ senior class includes defenders Enrique Campuzano and Diego Garcia, midfielders Chris Medina and Antonio Marquez, and goalkeeper Eduardo Martinez.

“They are mixed from players that started out a few years ago and played a little bit, players that have been here the whole time, and some that have never been out here at all,” Hannah said. “They’ve been a unifying element, really brought out the character of the team — and really made it quite a bit of fun.”

South Tahoe returned to action Thursday in a home match against Fallon. The Vikings host league-leading Truckee on Monday at 5 p.m.
