STANFORD, Calif. — The South Tahoe cross country team competed in the Stanford XC Invitational last month — and fared well against some of the top competition on the West Coast. In Division 3, the Vikings’ girls team finished 10th and the boys team took 26th at the event held at Stanford University Sept. 27.

“It is always a season staple because it gets all of the kids times amongst steep competition and at sea level,” Vikings girls head coach Amanda Hammond said. “All of our athletes raced incredibly well.”

South Tahoe’s girls team placed 10th out of 26 teams in the Division 3 race with 346 points. The Vikings’ top finisher on the 5k course was freshman Ally Sullivan, who ran a 19:03 to place 13th overall — the third fastest 5k time recorded by a runner in NIAA Div. I-A this season.

Freshman Allee Zaccor took 44th place with a run of 20:10 (seventh fastest in NIAA), and senior Cara Filce came in 87th overall by running a 21:21. Junior Riley Rettig (21:41) and senior Lauren Tang (22:49) also completed the course in less than 23 minutes — freshman Anna Moffat rounded out South Tahoe’s group with a time of 28:02.

The Vikings’ boys team took 26th out of 32 teams in Division 3, finishing with 615 points. Junior Orion Maxwell was STHS’ top runner in the race, placing 84th overall with a time of 17:22 — the 11th fastest 5k time recorded in NIAA Div. I-A this season.

South Tahoe’s remaining six runners all finished within 100 seconds of Maxwell led by junior Dillon Lemons, who ran a 17:58 to place 126th. Junior Mario Mangiaracina (18:04), junior Paul Mutz (18:13), sophomore Freeman George (18:30), junior Paul Hoefer (19:01) and freshman David Holmes (19:02) also raced for the Vikings.

With the NIAA regional and state meet less than a month away, South Tahoe is in a solid position in Div. I-A. In Athletic.net’s hypothetical Div. I-A meet, the Vikings’ girls sit in third place and STHS’ boys check in at fifth.

South Tahoe returns to action Saturday at the Asics Clovis Invitational at Woodward Park in Fresno, Calif. The meet is scheduled to start at 7:30 a.m.
