CARSON CITY, Nev. — The South Tahoe track and field team delivered its strongest combined performance of the season last weekend following a weekend off from competition. At the Carson Invitational last Saturday at Carson High, the Vikings’ girls team took fifth while STHS’ boys team placed seventh.

Three South Tahoe athletes won individual events at the invitational, led by Maya Brosch. The sophomore took first in the 400 (59.67) and 300 hurdles (16.89) to go along with a second-place finish in the 100 hurdles (16.98) and a third-place result in the 200 (26.75) — she has now won 10 events during the 2015 season.

Freshman Ally Sullivan also won an event for the South Tahoe girls team, taking the 1,600 with a time of 5:38.25. For the Vikings’ boys, the lone first-place finish came courtesy of Quinn Ritter — the junior took the long jump with a mark of 20-9 to go along with a 10th-place finish in the triple jump (37-4 1/4) and an 11th-place effort in the 200 (24.12)

South Tahoe’s girls scored 52 points to finish fifth overall. Host Carson swept the meet, and its girls team finished with 144.5 points — the only Div. I-A school to finish ahead of the Vikings on Saturday was Lowry, who placed fourth.

A pair of South Tahoe relay teams finished near the top on Saturday led by the quartet of sophomore Alexzandria Balme, Sullivan, sophomore Sierra Bedwell and senior Cara Filce taking fourth in the 4×800 relay with a time of 11:03.99. In the 4×400 relay, freshman Jessie Brown, Sullivan, Bedwell and Filce took sixth by running a 4:43.27.

Two Vikings delivered top-10 finishes at Carson, highlighted by Brown taking 10th in both the 300 hurdles (53.48) and long jump (14-1). Bedwell finished ninth in the 1,600 with a time of 6:14.56 — she also raced on both relay teams for STHS.

Top-20 efforts on the track for the girls included senior Kimberly Marquez placing 13th in the 100 hurdles (18.58), senior Lindsey Herring taking 15th in the triple jump (27-1 1/2) and freshman Theresa Sandborn finishing 20th in the long jump (12-9). Junior Kerry Norton was the Vikings’ top performer in the field events, finishing 15th in the shot put (27-5 1/2).

On the boys side, the Vikings finished in seventh place with a score of 38.5. The Senators boys team took first with 136 points.

Junior Orion Maxwell finished runner-up in the 3,200 for South Tahoe, running the event in 11:09.65 — he also placed 29th in the 400 (60.70) and ran a leg in the distance medley relay. Junior Dillon Lemons took seventh in the 3,200 by running a 11:46.69.

A pair of South Tahoe distance relay teams finished in the top four at the invitational, including a third-place run from the quartet of junior Daniel Sandborn, junior Carson Alexander, Maxwell and sophomore Kyle Ferguson in the 1,200-400-800-1,600 distance medley relay (11:59.84). Sandborn and Lemons raced with junior Paul Mutz and senior Eric Dunn in the 4×800 relay — that group took fourth in the event with a time of 9:07.08.

In the sprinting events last Saturday, senior Corey McCarthy produced the top individual performance for STHS — he finished third in the 400 with a time of 53.38. Freshman Cole Rhodes took 20th in the event, running a 59.00.

Alexander was the Vikings’ top finisher in both of the hurdles events at the invitational, placing seventh in the 110 hurdles (16.77) and ninth in the 300 hurdles (44.85). Junior Chase Stalter was South Tahoe’s only other hurdler to place in the top 20, finishing 19th the 300 hurdles (49.43).

Mutz led STHS with a 10th-place finish in the 1,600, running a 5:01.22 to finish 10 spots ahead of Vikings junior Mario Mangiaracina (5:14.70). In the 800, Dunn took 17th with a time of 2:19.68.

South Tahoe’s top performer in both field events Saturday was junior Blair Binns. Binns finished 21st overall in the shot put (35-2) and 26th in the discus (98-4).

South Tahoe returns to action Saturday, when it concludes the regular season with the Big George Invitational at Douglas High in Minden, Nev. The Div. I-A Northern League championships are scheduled for May 8 and 9 at Fernley — the top four finishers in each event advance to the Div. I-A state championships the following weekend at Del Sol High in Las Vegas.
