STHS baseball drops 2 to Reno

Staff Report

After South Tahoe’s 12-1 loss to Reno on Thursday, coach Matt Tillson didn’t have anything positive to say about his team’s performance. Although the Vikings lost 8-2 and 13-3 in their doubleheader on Saturday against the Huskies, Tillson came way more enthusiastic about his team.

“We played a lot better,” Tillson said. “Both of those scores weren’t indicative of what the games were like. We had two bad innings and that was it.”

In the first game, South Tahoe trailed only 3-2 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, then saw Reno score four runs to take control of the game. Buck Pershing pitched five solid innings, allowing only five hits and striking out seven batters.

Pershing also contributed two doubles offensively, while Kevin Yelles and David Schue each went 2 for 3. In the fourth inning, Schue scored Zach Kropf and Andrew Stuck converted a suicide squeeze to score Yelles from third base.

In the second game, Stephen Yarrow and Yelles each scored off Reno errors as the Vikings went up 2-0 in the top of the first. The Huskies countered with three runs in the bottom of the first, then South Tahoe tied it at 3 in the third before Reno opened things up.

The Huskies, who won the Sierra Division last year, scored one run in the bottom of the third and six runs in the fourth. The Vikings’ third run of the game came after Yarrow singled and stole second, then scored off Yelles’ single.

South Tahoe (2-6 overall, 1-5 division) continues division play on Thursday with a game at Wooster.

Reno blanks STHS softball

South Tahoe freshman Brittany Barcellos recorded two of the Vikings’ four hits in the Reno Huskies’ 21-18, 0-0 doubleheader victory over the Vikings on Saturday at Reno High. South Tahoe had only nine players – four of which were JV players.

The Vikings got hits from Danielle Henson and Shaylene McLaughlin in the two losses, while Anna McCracken was forced to pitch complete games because of the team’s pitching shortage on Saturday.

“We were missing a lot of girls for various reasons,” said STHS coach Joann Allister, who didn’t provide any details about the missing players. “I’ll know more on Monday. The girls that did play showed a tremendous amount of heart.

“Reno is probably the best team in Northern Nevada, possibly even the state. We had just got beaten by them 17-0 on Thursday. For those kids to come out and put it all on the line like they did says a lot about them.”

South Tahoe (1-7 overall, 0-6 division) continues Sierra Division play with a game at Wooster on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

Whittell’s games canceled

The Whittell baseball and softball teams had to cancel their games on Saturday because of inclement weather. The Warriors were scheduled to play a doubleheader against Tonopah at Lampe Park in Gardnerville. Both teams are scheduled to play nonleague games at Coleville on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
