Trails and Tails, Kirkwood test approach

Runners will have no shortage of events to choose from over the next few weeks.

Tahoe Trails and Tails gives runners an opportunity to share the experience with their dog. The 2-mile walk/run and 10-kilometer mountain run are slated for Aug. 29 at Spooner Lake State Park.

Those runs should prepare runners for an even tougher test the following week in the 24th annual Kirkwood 5K/10K Run on Sept. 4.

Veterinarian Staci Baker started Trails and Tails in 1995, generating funds for wildlife and animal welfare groups ever since. Proceeds will be channeled to the Yerington Animal Protection Society to assist with a program to spay and neuter dogs and cats.

Entry fees after Aug. 20 and on race day are $35 for competitors 17 or older, $25 for 16 and under, $20 for 10 and under. Family participation is encouraged as the cost is $95 for a family of four. Registration is from 8 to 9 a.m., with racing commencing at 9:30 a.m. There also is a $5 Nevada State Parks fee for parking.

The first 180 entries will receive a custom-designed, embroidered article of clothing; raffle prizes include day ski passes at Diamond Peak and Heavenly and a mountain bike; a barbecue put on by Kozy’s Kitchen, awards in five-year age increments and dog gifts by Nutro.

In the 2-mile race, participants will loop Spooner Lake and a 1,000-foot climb in the aspens and pines will test the 10K entrants.

Entry fees are $5 less if postmarked by today. Mail entries to Tahoe Trails and Tails, c/o Carol Fuller, 43 Panavista Circle, Yerington, NV, 89447.

The Tahoe Mountain Milers and Sagebrush Stompers Running Club-sponsored Kirkwood Run won’t leave any family member out. In addition to the relatively flat and paved 5K run and 10K trail adventure run, there is a 1-mile kids’ run.

Race applications are available at Kahle Community Center in Stateline, the city of South Lake Tahoe Parks and Recreation Center and Fleet Feet in Carson City. Computer users can also log on to or to get a racing form.

Race-day registration is set for 8 a.m. at the Kirkwood Main Lodge. The kids’ fun run begins at 9:30 a.m. and the 5K and 10K will follow.

The cost for runners registered by Aug. 27 is $25. That fee will rise to $30 from Aug. 28 on through race day. The kids’ run costs $5.

The grand prize is a 2004-05 Kirkwood Mountain Resort full-season pass. Other raffle prizes include a free mountain bike rental at Kirkwood’s Sports Center, a cross country season ski pass and gift certificates from Kirkwood Inn, Kirkwood Stables and Sorensen’s.
