Two stats say all that needs to be said about Thursday’s South Tahoe High-North Tahoe High girls’ basketball game: the visiting Lakers scored 11 points in the first half and the Vikings’ Tiffany Pinson scored 10 points in 43 seconds.

Pinson shook her team out of its doldrums with a 15-point second quarter, leading South Tahoe (1-2) to a 62-38 win.

Down 6-5 with two minutes gone in the quarter, Pinson hit a 3-pointer to put the Vikings ahead. The senior point guard then nabbed two quick steals that turned into easy layups and a few seconds later she nailed another trifecta.

The scoring jag came so quickly that North Tahoe (0-2) never recovered, especially after Pinson drained yet another 3-pointer and had a breakaway layup that gave the Vikings a 22-6 lead and the Lakers would never get within 10 points again.

“It felt like everything was coming together right then and our press was really working,” Pinson said. “This gives us a bunch of confidence, for sure.”

South Tahoe took a 31-11 lead into halftime and cruised for most of the second half, going deep into the bench.

Pinson finished the game with 22 points despite sitting for the entire fourth quarter when the game was well in hand and had six rebounds and six steals. Forward Jessica Lopez supplemented her with 12 points and five rebounds.

North Tahoe’s Kailey Rowan scored a game-high 24 points, but no other Laker scored more than four.

South Tahoe head coach Chris Proctor said the win couldn’t have come at a better time for his team, which played back-to-back games early this week and looking sluggish in the early going of Thursday’s game.

“We really needed a game like this,” Proctor said. “I told the team that if we got the press going, it would make all the difference in the world. They saw tonight that that’s the truth.”

North Tahoe played most of the fourth quarter with only six eligible players after two Lakers fouled out.
