Jonathan Sosa scored on a penalty kick in the 38th minute to make it 2-1 at halftime. The Warriors (3-10 overall, 0-1 league) host Truckee at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Whittell girls beat Fernley 7-0 last Thursday but lost to Sparks 2-1 in their league opener on Friday in Zephyr Cove. Marissa McKool scored the lone goal for Whittell (1-2, 0-1), which hosts Truckee at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

Mosqueda’s hat trick leads STHS to win

Ernesto Mosqueda recorded a hat trick and three other Vikings scored in a 6-2 Sierra Division victory over Wooster on Saturday in Reno.

The Vikings (5-0 overall, 2-0 division) opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Erick Sandoval scored off a rebound. Milton Montoya scored the next goal in the 18th minute after taking the ball from the right side and placing a beautifully placed shot to the far post.

Mosqueda made it 3-0 before halftime after collecting a pass from Ian Chandler and converting on a breakaway. After Mosqueda’s next goal, which was assisted by Montoya, the Colts scored two goals to make it 4-2. It was the first goals allowed this season by the South Tahoe defense, which was missing goalkeeper Alfredo Solorio because of a family commitment.

Ismael Mora, who had never played goalie before, replaced Solorio.

“It’s good because I didn’t want this start to make the kids think they were invincible,” said coach Chris DeLeon. “I don’t want all this success to go the kids’ heads so early in the season.”

Wooster wasn’t able to score again and Jamie Estrada made it 5-2 in the 63rd minute after he scored from outside the penalty box. Mosqueda finished the scoring in the 80th minute.

South Tahoe has two key division games this week. The Vikings face Douglas on Wednesday in Minden, then host Carson on Saturday at South Tahoe Middle School.

DeLeon said Matt Thompson and Ian Rice should return this week from injury. He also noted that P.J. Bacon, an all-league midfielder last year, is still recovering from a severe hamstring injury.

“It was one of the worst pulls we’ve ever seen,” DeLeon said of Bacon’s injury. “He was walking around on crutches for a while. But we’re starting to get healthy again and at the right time with Douglas and Carson this week.”

The South Tahoe girls’ soccer team also beat Wooster on Saturday to improve its record to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in division. No other details were available at press time. The Vikings play at Douglas on Tuesday and host Carson on Saturday at South Tahoe Middle School.

Guajardo, Kline shine for Whittell

Even without one of its top runners, the Whittell boys’ cross country team was able to finish seventh out of 10 teams at the Mountain Motivational meet hosted by North Tahoe on Friday.

Tyson Guajardo placed ninth overall, finishing the 3.3-mile course in 20 minutes, 25 seconds. Chris Craig took 21st (21:18) and Willis Hughes 28th (21:44) out of 80 runners.

In the girls’ race, Kristin Kline placed 20th overall (26:20) and Danielle Daly took 28th (27:55). The Warriors didn’t field a complete team and didn’t record a score in the team standings.

Whittell travels for a meet on Friday in Dayton and has another meet on Saturday at Independence.
