The Whittell softball team picked up a surprise win over larger North Tahoe High School 8-6 Thursday afternoon at Lampe Park in Gardnerville.

The Warriors of the Northern Nevada 2A got a win over 3A North Tahoe, a team they hadn’t played in several years.

“It was a good win for the girls,” said Warriors’ coach Lindsay Wines. “We’ve beaten them before, but we haven’t played them in five or six years. I was pretty apprehensive going in and I wasn’t sure what to expect since we haven’t played them in so long. Our three, four and five batters came through for us.”

Between them, the Warriors’ Whitney Gielow, Anna Kingman and Jessica Rickman accounted for seven of the team’s eight runs.

Rickman had two home runs and four RBIs, while Gielow had two doubles and two RBIs.

Ashley Wines pitched a complete game and struck out eight with one walk. She gave up five earned runs.

“I was happy with the way Kingman played at shortstop,” Wines said. “She made some really nice plays for us.

“All in all, except for the top of the sixth inning when we gave up four runs and had three errors, we played pretty flawless ball. I think the girls played a really nice game.”

The Warriors return to Lampe Park on Saturday to face Coleville in a doubleheader, beginning at noon.
